To save space on the C drive, we can create a junction for SoftwareDistribution folder.  This process requires to stop and start windows updates.  What will happen is that the software distribution folder will be redirected from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution to the D:\SoftwareDistribution with the use of the Microsoft Junction.  Meaning both folders will be existing.  When windows stores files to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution it is actually saving it to the D:\SoftwareDistribution.  You can assign any folder name on the D drive if you wish too.  I wrote down below the instruction.

Please download the Microsoft Junction file below

Stopping the Windows Update Service and renaming the folder

·  copy c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution to any folder of the target drive example D:\

·  type rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.oldand press enter
